Letter of Mayor Dean Trantalis

On Monday, America celebrates Labor Day. As you and your families cook out, journey to the beach or check out the holiday sales at shopping malls, please also take a minute to remember the meaning of the day.
Monday became a federal holiday to acknowledge the important role that labor has played in the prosperity of our nation. The United States became an industrial giant of the world through the hard work and tenacity of its workforce. Labor Day is a well-deserved tribute to both today’s labor force and the generations before that made our country strong.
I personally want to thank the dedicated employees who work for the city of Fort Lauderdale -- from the police officers and firefighters to the office clerks and utility plant operators. I also extend thanks to all those who work in business across our great city. You have helped make us the jewel that we are.
Still, on Labor Day, we also must recognize the challenges that exist for American workers. In our own community, we need to redouble our efforts to ensure living wages, affordable housing and a diversified economy. These are among my priorities as your mayor.
Please take this day to relax, unwind and enjoy the company of good friends and family.
