Hurricane Ian slammed into the West Coast of Florida as a Category 5 storm - destroying 90% of Fort Myers Beach, Florida. Relief efforts for Catholic Charities was coordinated by, and the brainchild of, Gabe Tischlet of Catholic Charities Emergency Management (as he did with Hurricane Michael in North Florida).
Episode Two will feature The United States Army and National Guard relief efforts, as well as the massive relief efforts of Catholic Charities and as we followed Catholic Charities, "Captured In Reeltime") setting up relief centers in five (5) Florida counties.
In both Category 5 Hurricanes, the SARnet Amateur Radio System in Florida, co-sponsored by the Florida Department of Transportation, was used by FCC Licensed Amateur Radio Operators and First Responder Strike Forces as the primary source of Emergency Communications until E-911, police fire and utility systems were restored. The system is managed by a team of volunteer Amateur Radio Operators and Patrick Lightcap (K4NRD) is considered The Godfather of SARnet and dedicated to helping communicate emergency communications when needed.
